WEEKLY POWER SURGE…

with John Young

Week commencing 8th February 2009

Build you week on a solid foundation, a Bible verse, an inspirational thought and a positive prayer.

Power Verses…… "O Lord, let my prayer come before Thee; incline Thine ear to my cry." (Psalm 88:2)

I would imagine a fair percentage of those who read my weekly Power Surge would consider themselves to be sports fans. I certainly am.  You either watch your chosen sport from the comfort and warmth of your home in front of your high definition 42” television set, while enjoying your favourite snack, washed down by a drink of your choice or……. you leave all your home comforts to join thousands of fellow fans and make the ‘pilgrimage’ to the sports stadium simply because you prefer to ‘soak-in’ the ‘electric’ atmosphere of a ‘live’ match, despite the fact it takes two hours to reach the stadium by various modes of transport plus,  having to endure an uncomfortable wind chill factor of -4 degrees centigrade! Give me my favourite home sofa anytime.

But just imagine for one moment that your team, the team you have supported all your life has reached the final of a European championship at a venue you cannot afford to travel to. Naturally you are devastated. However, out-of-the-blue, through a friend of a friend who is a very close friend of the billionaire chairman of your team, you receive a totally unexpected invitation from the chairman to attend the final at his expense. Wow, this is beyond your wildest imagination, because not only will you be present at the European final you never thought you would witness, you have been invited to travel to the final in the chairman’s executive jet as his guest. From the airport to the stadium you are driven by Rolls Royce, no queuing, no identification checks, nor tickets to produce, no hassle.

No having to sit in the cold open air. You are taken to a luxuriously central heated executive box, plush leather seats, a magnificent view of the game, offered a pre-match snack and enjoy a gourmet dinner at the conclusion of the game. All your dreams realized in one day!

You may have been to countless games, but never had you been treated in the way you will be treated at this one.

The privilege of access was all to do with who you knew and who you were with.

It is exactly the same when we come to God in prayer believing in Jesus name. We enter into a world of privilege, and we have access to the God of creation. Our burdens are lifted, our anxieties eased, our loneliness dispelled and our faith strengthened.

“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made know to God.”  Philippians 4:6.

Within this spiritual world of privilege we will discover…

A peace that the world cannot give………

                              Doors will be opened…….

Mountains of fear will be moved…….

                                             Doubts will disappear…….

And Jesus Christ, the Son of God promises……..

“If you ask Me anything in my name, I will do it.” John 14:14

The God of the universe is always willing to hear what we request through prayer. There is little doubt that the challenging and uncertain circumstances that confront families currently, will have resulted in an increased number of people resorting to prayer and a searching for something that is far more stable and reliable than what this world’s system has to offer!

The 19th century hymn writer Joseph Scriven penned the ideal words for our trouble times:

What a friend we have in Jesus,

All our sin and grief to bear!

What a privilege to carry

Everything to God in prayer!

O what peace we often forfeit,

O what needless pain we bear

All because we do not carry

Everything to God in prayer!

That wonderful truth remains constant, God answers prayer! What a privilege!

Furthermore, we don’t have to go through a priest…….

We don’t have to go through a secretary……..

  We don’t have to make a donation…….

We don’t have to go to a church building…….

We don’t have to have the ‘right’ family connections…….

We don’t have to use grammatically correct words…….

Prayer is as simple and as personal as talking to God in Jesus’ name.

The positive results will amaze you!

Prayer…..Eternal Father, thank you for revealing how I can come into Your presence through prayer. I now bring to You my needs. May I have the faith to be amazed.  Amen
